The Fundamentals of Fatherhood

We recently celebrated two graduations, one from Healing House and one from Lansing Correctional Facility. We are excited to share some testimonies from the graduating students on how the classes changed their perspective and understanding of many foundational things in life and fatherhood.

We were so pleased to celebrate another Healing House graduation and see how God has answered many prayers and transformed lives. This was the capstone event of their two- or three-year sobriety journey. We celebrated and recognized the men’s hard work and dedication over the last few years to reach this point. These men have been equipped with practical skills they can apply in their daily lives with their families. They are excited and motivated to be good husbands and fathers because they now have the tools to lead their families well. For many, the training does not stop at graduation. We love to see men from Healing House continue to come back for more training sessions even after they have graduated from the program.

The men love the discussion times when they get to share their experiences and what they have learned from the training. This tends to be a very vulnerable but also encouraging atmosphere which provides helpful insight into what the men have been through and how God is using this training to transform their lives. A spontaneous discussion about finances arose the other day. Some of these men come from backgrounds of drug dealing where they made substantial amounts of money and are now trying to learn how to earn and provide for their families on a normal income. We talked to them about tithing, budgeting, and generosity with what God has given them. Several of these men also see that they can use and apply their entrepreneurial skills more constructively. They see what they used for bad now being translated into a gift they can use for the kingdom of God.

We also had the privilege of celebrating nine graduates from our Within My Reach program at Lansing Correctional Facility. To qualify for this class, these men had already completed our first course: Good Dads 2.0.  In Within My Reach, these men learned useful communication skills, how to respect and be attentive to other’s feelings, how to value women, how to heal from past trauma, and so much more. For a description of what each class covers, visit our website here: fatherhoodfoundations.com/programs.

Charlie, one of the graduates shared his testimony of how he was raised in a broken home by his aunt and uncle because his parents did not want anything to do with him. He stated, “I didn’t want to bring kids into this broken world, but with this class and the World Impact Trauma class, I am a new man.” Although he had a poor example of a family growing up, he learned that the cycle does not have to continue, and he can be a better man for his future family.

Harry also shared how the class impacted his life and his view of women. “In the thirty weeks of these two classes, I now know how my actions make my wife feel. I see how important relationships are, and my relationship with God now influences my relationships… I now see how special a wife is. I see how much she’s worth and how precious she is.”

One of the graduates compared fatherhood to Hebrews 5:12 “By this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” He added, “We should be teachers eating meat, but we need milk. You reinforced the fundamentals of Fatherhood for us. Which we needed. This a great course. Great curriculum and great that you tied Scripture to every lesson.”

We are so thankful for how the Lord is changing lives through these classes! Thank you again for partnering with us and please continue to pray for these men and their families to be bold in their pursuit of Godliness, love, and change. Pray that they will seek God first in everything they do and that they will be a light and testimony to those around them. We are humbled at how God is using us, and we are looking ahead with anticipation and great expectation for what God will do in the future!

Thank you for all your prayers and support; we could not do this work without you!
